A Friday that starts at four

· 1 min read

White Friday is on an actual Friday this year, and every time that happens Jeddah has the same shape. Today it does.

The sale opened at midnight, on the phone. That is most of the online day: a burst before sleep, a second one over breakfast, and then the city goes quiet the way only Jeddah goes quiet, the slow hour before the prayer and the long lunch after it. By two in the afternoon the online numbers have done most of what they are going to do.

The mall has not started.

It fills after four. It fills with cars before it fills with people, and in every car a family. Grandparents in the back. Three children. A daughter-in-law with the list on her phone. Somewhere in that car is the one person actually deciding, and it is rarely the person who will hold the bag at the till. She is buying for five, what she buys will be seen by five, and it will be judged by the aunts on Saturday before it is ever unboxed.

That is the customer. The imported creative was drawn for somebody else, a single shopper with a countdown and a wishlist, and what actually turns up is a household: late, slow, choosing together, with the purchase already on show to the people it is for.

Two Fridays, then, in one city. The online one ends before the offline one begins, and the plan usually funds the first properly, because the first has a dashboard.

The person this whole day is for never shops alone.
