Piece 551Craft

A shelf that holds her books

· 1 min read

A man spends three weekends designing a bookshelf for his daughter's room, and the books are still on the floor.

He has measured the wall twice. He has drawn the joints, changed the wood, and found a better hinge for a door the shelf does not need. Every version is closer to the one in his head, and none of them is in the room.

It is tempting to think the choice is between that shelf and a bad one. A wobbly flat-pack thing, a plank on two bricks, something he would be embarrassed to show anyone.

That is not the real alternative. The opposite of the perfect shelf is a shelf that holds her books. It is low enough for her to reach. It is there by the start of term. It does the job a shelf exists to do, and she can use it tonight.

If that is not enough, the fix is to say what enough actually means. Perhaps it has to take the heavy atlas, or fit under the window. Write that down and build to it. A clear standard can be met, checked, and improved next year.

Perfect cannot be met, which is exactly what makes it so comfortable. While the drawing is still being improved, nothing has been judged, nobody has been disappointed, and he never has to find out whether the thing he made was any good. Polishing feels like care. Often it is a place to wait where nobody can see you.

Good enough, honestly defined, is not a compromise. It is the job.

His daughter does not want the shelf in his head. She wants her books off the floor.
