Piece 652Market

A thrill with a safety net

· 1 min read

Buying from a shop you discovered an hour ago in your feed feels like a small adventure.

Think of a woman in Jeddah ordering a dress from a seller she has never heard of. There is a little rush in it. Will it fit? Will it look like the photograph? Is this a find her friends have not seen yet? Part of the pleasure is precisely that she does not know.

That feeling is worth something. People seek it out. It is why new things get tried at all.

But the feeling of risk and actual risk are different animals. She wants the first. She does not want the second, which is losing her money to a seller who never sends anything, or being stuck with something she cannot return.

The sellers who do well online seem to understand this split without ever naming it. They let the discovery feel bold, the brand feel unexpected, the product feel like a small gamble on taste. And then, underneath, they make the transaction boringly safe: a clear returns window, a real phone number, an address, a delivery date that turns out to be true, the option to pay when the parcel arrives.

The opposite mistake is everywhere too. Some offers feel perfectly safe while carrying real danger: the very cheap gadget with no warranty, the deal that looks familiar because the logo is close to a famous one. The calm surface is the problem. People walk in without noticing anything at stake.

Perceived risk is where the excitement lives, and excitement is where people grow attached to a thing. Real risk is where they get hurt, and once hurt, they do not come back.

So give them the drop in the stomach. Just make sure the floor is there.
