A Thursday that sets the week

· 1 min read

In Riyadh a certain kind of friendship lives on Thursday night.

Same café, same corner, roughly the same hour. Nobody sends an invitation. It is simply where the week ends for five people who met at university, and the rest of their week bends around it. Work runs late on other nights, never that one.

That is a calendar, even though none of them would call it one. Every calendar is a decision about which moments count and whom you are keeping time with. Weeks, months, the Hijri year and the Gregorian one running side by side, the school term: none of these is found in nature. People agreed on them so that they could turn up at the same place on the same day.

Which means a calendar tells the truth about a life more plainly than anything said about it. Look at what repeats in someone's week and you can read where they have been putting themselves, what they are heading toward, and which people are travelling with them. Look at what never appears and you learn as much.

It is easy to treat the calendar as weather, something that happens to us. It is closer to a set of standing agreements, most made long ago and never revisited. Tuesday is for this because it always has been. The month ends with that because it did last year.

Agreements can be renegotiated. If the rhythm you keep is taking you somewhere you do not want to go, or with people you would not choose again, more discipline inside it will not help.

A different calendar will.
