Market

A Wednesday this year

· 1 min read

National Day is a week from today, and this year it falls on a Wednesday.

The twenty-third never moves. The day it lands on moves every year, and almost every plan I have seen is built on the day rather than on the date.

Look at what a Wednesday does to the week. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are a working run-up, so the offer has three days to reach people who are at a desk. Wednesday is the day itself, and the country is not shopping, it is out. Thursday is a question mark: part of the market will take it, part will not, and nobody confirms which until the week before. Then the weekend. One trading week has quietly become two short ones with a hole in the middle.

Last year the twenty-third was a Tuesday. The run-up was two days, the day itself sat early, and the tail ran into the weekend while the flags were still out. That is a completely different shape, and it is the shape the plan on the shared drive was built for.

So the words get copied and the shape never gets checked. Stock goes out positioned for one peak instead of two. The rota is written for a single big day. The delivery promise is made straight across the hole, which is how someone who ordered on Tuesday finds out on Sunday. The media is weighted to the twenty-third, the one day the customer has somewhere else to be.

None of that is a creative problem, and none of it shows up in a review of the work.

The fix costs one question, asked before anyone opens last year's folder. Which weekday is it, and where does the week break?

The date is the only part of a national day that does not move. The plan is usually built on the part that does.
