A yes that could not be no

· 1 min read

A father in Alexandria visits a language centre to ask about evening classes for his daughter. He wants to compare two or three places and talk it over at home.

The woman at the desk has other plans. The discount ends today. The group is nearly full. She has already started the form. Every time he says he would like to think about it, she answers a different question. Forty minutes later, he has paid for a term.

On her sheet, that is a sale. In his head, it is something he was steered into, and he will spend the term looking for reasons it was a mistake. When his daughter misses a class, he will not push her. When a friend asks about the place, he will mention the forty minutes before he mentions the teachers.

This is the part that pressure hides. A yes is only worth something if no was available. Take away the chance to refuse, and what you collect is not agreement. It is compliance, and compliance leaves the moment the pressure does.

The same is true of the box ticked in advance, the cancellation that takes six phone calls, the free trial that quietly turns into a bill. Each one manufactures a yes, and each one empties it of meaning.

People cannot sign up for something with their whole heart unless they were also free to walk out of the door. The choice is not a risk to the commitment. It is what the commitment is made of.
