Approved by the founder
Look at a small advertiser's creative and you can usually describe the founder.
The same restraint, the same humour, the same colours, the same kind of face. Ten assets, one taste. Not a house style, which is a decision somebody argued for out loud. A preference, applied one approval at a time by a person who has never had to say what it is.
Every ad that runs in a small account had to get past that person, and the test being applied is almost never the stated one. It is whether they themselves would click it. Whether they would want it in their own feed. Whether a friend seeing it would make them wince. Those are sincere questions and they are the wrong ones, because the founder is not the customer, and in a great many categories not close to one.
So the account speaks, again and again, to the narrow set of people who share the taste of the person approving. It works for a while, because that set is real and reachable. Then it flattens, and the conversation turns to bidding, fatigue, the platform, the season.
From the platform side, with a great many of these accounts in view at once, the ones that got past it had done one specific thing. They let an asset the founder disliked stay live long enough to be judged by strangers. Not a rebrand. One ad, three weeks, on a budget small enough to survive being wrong.
Half of those failed and the founder felt vindicated, which is a cheap price for the other half. Those were the best thing in the account, and the founder still does not like them.
Taste is what a founder brings that no agency can supply. It is also the smallest audience in the building.
