Being new is a season
December brings the lists. The names to watch, the finds of the year, the labels everyone will be wearing next. Being on one feels like arrival.
Picture a young abaya label in Riyadh that spent this year being everyone's discovery. Friends sent its posts to friends. Waiting lists formed. A year-end round-up put it near the top.
It earned that. And it should enjoy it, briefly, because the list is describing something that cannot last.
New is not a quality a brand has. It is a moment the brand is passing through. What made people talk was partly the work and partly the pleasure of finding it, and that pleasure wears off whatever you do. Next December there will be a different label in that slot, found by the same people with the same excitement. Nobody will have turned against the first one. They will simply have moved their attention, which is what attention does.
So the more useful question, on the day the list comes out, is not how to stay the next big thing. You cannot. It is what this label will be for people once nobody is discovering it any more.
Some brands have an answer: a fit that is reliably right, a cut that solves a real problem, a way of treating customers that people come back for. They become the thing people choose, which is quieter and lasts longer than being the thing people find.
Others only ever had the novelty, and they learn that the year after the list.
