Beyond the spelling

· 1 min read

A cousin in Sheikh Zayed is about to open a phone repair stall. He sends a photograph of the printed price list he plans to hang above the counter and asks if the spelling is right.

There are two mistakes. They are easy to fix, and fixing them is worth doing.

But the list has forty lines on it. Every possible repair, every model, in small print. The people who walk up to that counter want one thing, usually urgently: a cracked screen, a phone that will not charge. Most of them will not read past the fifth line. The real question is not the spelling. It is whether a wall of prices is what should greet a worried person at all, or whether three clear promises would bring more of them back.

When someone asks for feedback, they usually draw a small box around it. Check the spelling. Which of these three logos. Does this sentence sound right. It is polite, and comfortable, to stay inside the box. We answer what we were asked and everyone moves on.

Sometimes that is the right help. Often it is the least of what we could offer.

The more generous answer can be about the part that is missing, the thing not on the page. And when someone offers three options, it can be kinder to say none of them, and explain why, than to pick the least bad one.

This takes care. Nobody wants a stranger redesigning their life in reply to a spelling question. But a friend who only ever corrects commas is protecting their own comfort, not helping.

The question someone asks shows where they are looking. The help they need is often just beside it.
