Piece 316Market

Bring it before it is ready

· 1 min read

Two friends in Alexandria run a small label that prints designs on T-shirts and sells them through an online page.

One of them never shows anything until it is finished. The artwork is final, the colours are chosen, the mock-up is clean. When she does share it, she apologises first, in case it is not good enough.

The other walks in with a sketch on the back of a receipt. Half a slogan. A drawing of a camel that might become a logo. He shows it to his partner, to three regular customers, to his younger sister. Some of it dies on the spot. Some of it gets a laugh he did not expect, and that laugh tells him where to go next.

It is easy to see the second friend as careless. He is not. He is taking the bigger risk. Showing something unfinished means watching someone shrug at it. It means a quiet room when you hoped for a loud one.

But nearly everything good the label has made started as one of his scraps. Not because he is more talented than she is. Because the work only got better once it was in front of someone else, and he put it there sooner.

This only works among people who trust each other. A partner who will say this part is weak without making it personal. Customers who like being asked.

Given that, the rough version is not a lesser form of the work. It is how the work begins. The hard part is the moment you hold up the receipt.
