Market

Cast, not placed

· 1 min read

The series that will run through the fasting month are being shot in Cairo now, and somewhere in each production office there is a list of brands to be written into the scripts.

The ad break is a different transaction. This is the thing the viewer chose. Forty minutes a night, thirty nights running, in a room with the family and the phone face down, which is the best quality of attention anyone in this market will be given all year.

Which is why the standard is different. An interruption is forgiven for interrupting. A brand inside the story has been let in, and once it is in, it is judged the way everything else in the frame is judged.

There are two kinds of placement and one viewing is enough to tell them apart. In the first, the product does something. It is why a character is in the wrong neighbourhood. It is the excuse for a conversation, the errand that goes wrong, the thing somebody is embarrassed to be seen carrying. In the second, the product is on the table. Label out, lit, in every kitchen scene, doing nothing at all.

Marketing calls the second one presence and counts the seconds. The audience reads it as set dressing, and on a bad night reads it as the reason the scene felt bought. The brand has then spent the most valuable attention of the year making the story slightly less true.

A brand written into a story is judged the way a character is.

A character who does nothing for thirty nights is not neutral. It is in the way.
