Compared to what
This is the week after Eid, and on every self-serve dashboard in the region the seven-day view is showing a fall.
It is a real fall. Orders down, cost per order up. It is also exactly what the account did last June, and the founder has no way of knowing, because the window they live in does not remember.
From the platform side I watched this happen to a great many small advertisers at once. The seven-day view is the tab that opens. It compares this week with last week, and last week was the run-up to Eid, when everyone was buying the sacrifice and the road home, and this week is the holiday itself, when nobody buys anything from a phone in a car full of relatives. The calendar built the dip.
What happens next is the fear. The founder starts rebuilding an account that is doing exactly what it should. New audiences, a budget cut or doubled, creative pulled because it stopped working. By the time the market comes back the account no longer looks like the one that was working, and the recovery gets credited to the changes.
The obvious fix, the same week last year, does not work here either. Eid moves about eleven days earlier every year, so the same seven days last year sat on the other side of the holiday, in the run-up. Year on year the chart says the business has halved. The calendar walked out from under the comparison.
In a market whose calendar moves, a number is only a problem relative to a comparison, and the comparison has to be built by hand: Eid week against Eid week, whichever dates those were. No dashboard I have used does this on its own. It offers a default, confidently, and the default is wrong for about six weeks of every year here.
The dip is not the thing to fear. The default is.
