Counted as the campaign

· 1 min read

In the western region of Saudi Arabia the weeks around Hajj, expected in the last days of this month, move numbers that no campaign went anywhere near.

Hotel rates in Jeddah sit where they sit. Occupancy across the west runs at a level the rest of the year never asks for. Dates, perfume, prayer beads and gold sell to people buying gifts to carry home to another country, and the courier volumes leaving the region rise with them.

None of that was created by a brand. Next month a good deal of it will sit in a report with a campaign name above it.

I do not think anybody plans the theft. It happens because the national number arrives before the regional one. The person writing the report has a week to write it, a chart that goes up, and a holiday in the middle of the period that explains any part of the shape they do not like. Splitting the country and putting the west on its own line takes an afternoon and gives the credit away.

That is the whole of measurement politics. The tide belongs to whoever describes the period first, and the honest description is always the slower one to produce.

The cost does not land in the report. It lands in the month after it. A June funded by a May uplift is a June funded by a customer who has already flown home, so the money goes out against footfall that is no longer in the city, the numbers come in soft, and the miss gets explained by the summer.

The uplift was real enough. It was addressed to somebody else.
