Drafted and paused

· 1 min read

In the first fortnight of January the accounts sort themselves into two groups, and neither group has a result yet.

In one there is nothing new. December's campaigns still running, the same audiences, the same budgets, and the plan for the fasting month exists as a line in somebody's deck.

In the other there is a campaign built and paused. Creative loaded, in both languages. Audiences assembled. Budgets typed in. A start date left blank, because the month is expected around the middle of February and the beginning depends on the sighting, so whoever built this knew the date could not be keyed in yet and left the field alone.

That paused draft is the cleanest tell I know, and the reason is the timing. It is the only thing an account does before it has to. Everything else is a response to something: a cost climbs, a competitor turns up, a result lands, the founder reads something on a Friday, and the account moves. A campaign sitting paused in the second week of January answers nothing. Nothing has happened. Somebody sat down in an ordinary week and did work that pays out six weeks later, with no deadline pushing them and nobody watching them do it.

Readiness is visible long before performance is. Every year the two groups finish the month a long way apart, and every year the difference gets looked for in the creative and the bidding, weeks after it was sitting in plain view in a date field left empty.
