Drawings nobody needs to sign

· 1 min read

There is an illustrator in Riyadh whose drawings you can pick out on a wall without reading the corner.

There is no signature to look for. It is the way her lines thin out at the end, the slightly crowded compositions, a colour palette nobody else seems to reach for. Someone who has seen one of her book covers knows the next one from across a shop. No label has ever had to tell them.

That recognition is the whole asset. It is why people commission her rather than someone cheaper, and why a buyer will wait months for a print instead of choosing something ready on the shelf.

So the dangerous job is not the small one. It is the large one that asks for none of it. A long series of drawings in a neutral style, made to sit beside material somebody else drew, with instructions to keep her own hand out of it. The money is real and the work is easy to say yes to.

To do it, she has to spend weeks making images on purpose that look as though nobody made them. A hand that took years to learn to leave a trace now has to learn not to. And everyone who sees those drawings later learns nothing about the person behind them.

Most of what is made anywhere could have come from anyone. That is fine for most people, because sameness is what they are selling.

The rare maker whose work is known on sight is holding something worth more than any single job. When your hand shows in the work, the jobs to be wary of are the ones that ask you to hide it.
