Piece 201Craft
Easy to find when someone is looking
Somewhere in the lanes of Deira there is a key cutter who is better than the others. He gets difficult old keys right on the first try, and he tells you plainly when the lock is the problem rather than the key.
Plenty of people would go back to him. Most cannot. They remember the bright sign, the warm greeting, the speed. They do not remember his name, or which lane, and there is nothing in their pocket to remind them.
He worked hard on the first impression. He did very little about the second visit.
We tend to spend our effort on the moment of meeting. The sign, the opening line, the way we introduce ourselves, the polish on a first sale. That matters. But much of the value arrives later, when a person who already knows you sets out to find you, specifically, and either does or gives up.
That is not the same as fighting to be the first result when a stranger looks up key cutters nearby. Being found by strangers is a contest with everyone in the trade. Being found by people already searching for you is entirely in your own hands.
It comes in two parts, and the order matters. First, be good enough that someone bothers to come looking. Most never get past this. Then make the looking easy: a name people can say, a card dropped in the bag, a number that still works next year, a sign readable from the end of the lane.
The bright sign brought him the first customer. The fifth visit depends on something plainer: being easy to find for the person who already wants him.
