Every creator has the same code

· 1 min read

Open any creator's page in the region this week and scroll to the caption. There is a code. It is fifteen percent. It was fifteen percent on the last page too.

I do not think anyone designed this. The code exists because it is the easiest way to measure a creator: give each one a string of letters, count the orders that carry it, pay on the count. From the brand's side it is tidy. From the audience's side it has quietly changed what the creator is for.

A creator's real gift to an audience is judgement. Somebody with taste, who eats around the city or dresses a child or reads the label, saying this one, not that one, and being right often enough that people stopped checking. That is rare, and it is the whole reason the follow happened.

Then November arrives, every account has a code, every code is the same depth, and the audience learns two things at once. That everything is fifteen percent off if you wait for the right caption. And that the recommendation and the discount arrive together, so the recommendation is now part of the offer. A person people trusted has become a coupon with a face.

In Saudi Arabia a creator needs a permit to do this work, and the permit at least treats the role as a role. The code treats it as a channel, priced by the order, and channels are interchangeable.

The code was supposed to tell the brand which creator moves product. What it does is spend the creator's judgement to move it, a little on every post, until the audience discounts the recommendation the way it discounts the price. The number keeps coming in. The thing being measured is used up to produce it.

The code was meant to measure the creator. It spends them instead.
