Every Sunday at eight

· 1 min read

A young woman in Qena makes earrings at the kitchen table and sells them through her page.

When she started, she posted whenever a pair felt ready, which in practice meant whenever she felt like it. Some weeks that was four times. Some months it was never. The page drifted, and so did she.

Then she told her followers something specific: a new pair every Sunday at eight in the evening. A small promise. Public, though, and with a time attached.

There are still Sundays when she does not feel like it at all. Wednesday was slow, the wire fought her, nothing she made looked right. On a page run by mood, that is a skipped week. On a page run by a promise, she sits down on Saturday night because people are expecting something, and by the second hour she is enjoying it again.

That is the part people miss about commitments. They do not only get the work done on bad days. They change the person doing it. The promise drags her to the table, and the table changes how she feels about being there. The energy follows the commitment, not the other way round.

It is possible to arrange a life in which you only work when you are in the mood. It is rarely a productive one. Anyone who has come back from a long break and found the first week strangely heavy knows why. With no appointment to keep, most of us slow down until we stop, and stopping feels like rest right up until it feels like rust.
