Piece 738Inside

Everything except the customer

· 1 min read

A young man in Dammam is starting a mobile car detailing service, and he has been busy for two months.

He has a logo, redrawn four times. A van, wrapped. Uniforms in two colours. A price list designed and printed. A booking page with a calendar that syncs with his phone. He has compared three suppliers of polish and negotiated with all of them.

Everything on that list was necessary. None of it was the hard part.

The hard part is a single question that has not yet been tested. Will enough people in the city pay him a fair price to clean their car in their driveway, and will they like it enough to tell a neighbour?

Every other task has a known shape. You can finish a logo. You can choose a supplier. There is a satisfaction in closing those jobs that the open question never offers. So the tasks grow, and the question waits.

It is a way of hiding, and a very respectable one, because it looks exactly like work.

Even the costly parts are not the difficult ones. If something can be bought, rented or handed to someone who does it well, it is just a cost. The van can be wrapped by a specialist. The booking page can be rented. What nobody can sell him is the moment a stranger hands over the keys, sees the result, and mentions him to the person next door.

If customers bring the next customers, and each one is worth more than it costs to serve, he has a business. If not, nothing on the list will save it.

Every hour he spends anywhere else is an hour spent on the easier question.
