Everything falls due at once

· 1 min read

Middle of July, and a Gulf household is paying for its year.

The tenancy is due, or the next cheque of it. The school invoice for September has arrived and it is the largest single number the family will see all year, multiplied by however many children they have. The tickets for five people are bought. Somewhere in the same fortnight sit the car renewal, the insurance and whatever has been put aside for six weeks away from home.

None of it is optional and none of it is spread out. It lands together.

Then a category reports a soft July and files it under seasonality, or the audience being away, or simply the summer. From the platform side I have watched enough of these summers to think that is half an answer. A fair number of the people who look absent are still reading the product page and still deciding. The money is committed, which is not the same thing as absent.

That is a different problem and it does not answer to the same tools. A deeper discount asks the identical question again, louder, in a month when the obstacle is not the price. What moves in these weeks is the shape of the payment and the date on it. Split it. Start it in September. Take a deposit and hold the number.

The tell is basket size. Small orders hold up all summer. What stops is the large considered purchase, and it stops in households that could afford it in March and will afford it again in the autumn.

A household here does not spend its year in even slices, and it does not decide in even slices either. For about eight weeks the question a brand can actually answer is not how much. It is when.
