Piece 563Inside

Excellent or easy, pick one

· 1 min read

Picture an old carpenter in Jeddah whose cabinets people wait months for. Ask him how to get that good and the honest answer is not complicated. Years of early mornings, sawdust in everything, jobs redone because one joint was slightly off.

What most people really want from him is a shorter version. They want to be that good, but on Saturdays, when nothing else is on, without the mess.

It is a very human request. Most of us carry around a list of things we would like to be excellent at, and next to each one, quietly, a condition: as long as it fits around the rest of my life.

The trouble is that the condition cancels the wish.

The condition rarely announces itself. It shows up as a sensible exception. Not this morning, I slept badly. Not this month, the family is visiting. Not that course, it is on the other side of the city. Each exception is reasonable on its own, and together they are the whole story. Convenience gets a vote every single day, and on most days it wins, so the thing that needed a hundred uncomfortable days gets twelve.

So there is a choice to make, and it is cleaner than it looks. You can have the thing that sits near the top, or you can have the version that never interrupts your week.

Both are reasonable. Plenty of good lives are built on the second.

But it is worth being honest about which one you are actually signed up for, because asking for both is how people spend ten years waiting to start.
