Full feed, empty checkout

· 1 min read

The parks are full today, the boats on the Nile are full, and so is every feed in the country. Somewhere an advertising account is having its best day of the month on paper.

The pattern is the same on every holiday like this one. Attention is cheap and abundant, because a few million people are out with a phone in one hand and an hour to fill between the food and the drive home. The cost of a click falls. Video views climb. The comment count beats anything the account has managed since Ramadan ended.

Checkout does not move. Usually it falls.

That combination is the most misread thing on a self-serve dashboard. A click rate measures how available somebody's attention was, not how much they wanted the product. On a public holiday availability is at its peak and intent is entirely elsewhere, in a park, with the family, being spent on the ice cream in front of them.

What the numbers hide is that distinction, and they hide it in the most flattering way possible. The report shows a creative that performed and an audience that responded, so the account rewards both. The holiday creative gets rolled out everywhere. The holiday audience gets duplicated and scaled. Next week the same creative does nothing, and the team concludes that the platform changed.

Intent runs on its own calendar and it is not the media calendar. The person who watched the whole video today is a buyer tomorrow, back at a desk, in a browser tab at eleven in the morning, with a decision to make and the money to make it with.

So today buys attention at the best price of the month and nothing else. The buying comes back on Tuesday, and the budget should be sitting there waiting for it.
