Good at being small

· 1 min read

A woman in Khobar sells personalised keyrings online. A name engraved on brass, a small leather tab, delivered in two days in a box that feels like a gift. That is all she does, and she does it beautifully.

It is a good little business. Cheap to run, easy to understand, and pleasant for the people who buy from her. She works at her own pace and knows most of her repeat customers by name.

Then she starts looking at the large online stores.

She adds phone cases, because they sell. Then wall clocks, then children's toys, then a promise of same-day delivery that she cannot really keep. The homepage gets crowded. The care that went into each keyring thins out across three hundred products she barely knows.

What she ends up with is neither a small careful shop nor a real department store. It is a worse version of both.

If she truly wants to run a big store, the honest answer is to build one properly, with the money, staff and warehouse that requires. But that has its own envy waiting. A large store is not a marketplace. It cannot do what the giants do. It is only good at being a large store.

Every shape of business is good at some things and useless at others. That is not a weakness. It is what having a shape means.

The business pages are full of companies that grew enormous very fast. Very few of them started with a woman engraving names on brass, and that is fine.

The trouble only begins when she forgets what she set out to build.
