Piece 580Inside

Have to, or get to

· 1 min read

Every day is made of three kinds of time, and they are hard to tell apart from the inside.

Take a woman in Doha who drives her father to physiotherapy every week after work. On paper it is an obligation. The clinic set the appointment, his doctor set the schedule, the traffic on the Corniche sets the pace. She has to do it.

But she also gets to. Her father is still here to be driven. She has a car, a working day that ends in time, and enough of his trust that he lets her sit in the waiting room while he grumbles about the exercises. Plenty of people would give a great deal for that hour. Whether it feels like a chore or a privilege depends almost entirely on which way she looks at it.

Then there is the hour after, back home, when nothing is required of her at all. That is the only time that is truly hers to spend, and it is the time most easily lost. The phone comes out, one short video leads to another, and the one free hour of the day disappears into nothing she will remember.

The trick is not finding more free time. It is noticing that the get-to hours were already worth wanting, if she lets them be. And, with a little planning ahead, shaping the obligations of the week until they become things she looks forward to rather than endures.

When all three line up, the same week that read like a list of duties starts to feel like a life.
