Piece 283Inside

It will only take a second

· 1 min read

A man in Shubra has started renting out cars on the side. An old school friend of his has two hundred other parents in a group chat for their children's class, and the man has a simple request. Could he post a few kind words and the number? It will only take a second.

He is right about the second. Typing the message would take less time than reading this paragraph.

But time is not what is being asked for. What the friend has, in that group, is years of being the parent whose word can be taken at face value. When he says a teacher is good, people listen. When he says a shop is honest, people go. None of that cost him money. All of it took a long time to build, and it is exactly what the message would spend.

If the cars turn out to be fine, nobody will remember who recommended them. If one breaks down on the road to the coast with a family inside, everyone will.

Most of us now work less with our hands than with our attention and our reputation. A request that would be trivial for a builder, carry this for a moment, can be heavy for the rest of us, because the thing being lifted is our name. Share my page. Introduce me to your cousin. Mention me to your landlord. Each one is quick. Some of them are very expensive.

The useful test is not how long it takes. It is what it draws on, and whether we would be comfortable seeing that account run down if it goes wrong.

Saying no to a friend is uncomfortable for a minute. Saying yes to the wrong thing can cost the trust of two hundred people who were never asked.
