Just cereal

· 1 min read

In a large supermarket in Riyadh, there is a short shelf at the end of the cereal aisle with a sign above it that says diet.

The boxes on it are not strange. Oats, flakes, a few with dried fruit. Several of them taste almost exactly like the boxes twenty steps away. Yet most shoppers walk straight past, because the sign has already answered a question they did not ask. This is food for people who are watching something. Not for me.

Move one of those boxes into the main run of the aisle, at eye height, with nothing on the shelf strip but its name, and something odd happens. It sells. Same box, same taste, same price. It simply stopped announcing that it belonged to a smaller group.

That is the quiet power of being the normal one. Most people are not looking for the special version of anything. They want the one that needs no explanation at breakfast.

So the brands that sit in the middle of the aisle work hard to stay there. They try to suit every household and upset no one, which sounds safe and is in fact impossible.

Meanwhile, a few shoppers are doing the opposite of everyone else. They turn the box over and read the back. They look for one small mark that most people never notice. There are not many of them, but they are consistent, they talk to each other, and they keep asking for it.

Over time, the shop listens. A product that lived at the end of the aisle drifts towards the middle. The sign comes down. What used to be a request becomes the thing you pick up without thinking.

Being the regular kind is the prize. It is also never permanent, because the people reading the small print are slowly deciding what regular means next.
