More reach than the whole village

· 1 min read

A nineteen-year-old in Minya films himself fixing a dripping tap, a loose hinge, a fan that hums. He posts it from his phone. By the end of the week more people have watched him than his grandfather spoke to in a lifetime.

It is worth stopping on that, because it is new. For almost all of history, a craftsman's reach was the distance someone would walk to find him. A good name travelled by mouth, slowly, and stopped at the edge of the district. Even a generation ago, speaking to strangers in another country meant a printing press, a broadcaster, money and somebody's permission.

Now a young man with a cracked screen and a clear explanation has more leverage than most merchants who ever lived.

That shift is not finished, and it is not comfortable. The people who built their standing the old way, by holding the shop, the contacts and the gate, are tired of defending it. Some of the tiredness comes out as contempt: these kids, these videos, nobody learns a trade properly now. The louder it gets, the more it sounds like a rearguard and the less like a verdict.

None of this is guaranteed to end well. The same tools that let him teach strangers also fill evenings with noise and leave plenty of people feeling worse.

But over a long enough stretch, the direction is visible. More people can be heard. More people can learn from someone they would never have met. The ones who choose to teach, connect and lead with that reach keep moving the line forward.

Holding both at once, the long view and the leverage in your own pocket, turns out to be a steady way to live. Patience about where things are heading. Appetite for what you can do about it this week. Each one makes the other possible.
