Piece 549Inside

Not everyone is meant to get it

· 1 min read

A small online shop in Amman sells T-shirts printed with lines that only make sense if you grew up in the city. A thing every grandmother says when you leave the house. A street name that means something nobody from outside could guess. A bus route everyone once complained about.

Visitors from elsewhere scroll past, puzzled. A few leave comments asking what any of it means.

It would be easy to read that puzzlement as failure, and to soften the lines until anyone could follow them. That would kill the shop.

Every joke leaves somebody out. This is not a flaw in humour. It is how humour works. A line lands when the people hearing it briefly hold the same memory, the same reference and the same way of seeing the world, and the laugh is the sound of recognising that you belong to that group.

The same is true of a design, a slogan, a song, an advert. When one falls flat, the usual verdict is that it was not good enough. Often the truer verdict is that it reached a room with too few people already in on it.

That distinction matters, because the two problems have opposite fixes. Work that is genuinely weak needs to be made better. Work that is fine but landed among strangers needs a different audience, or a larger one of the right kind, not a blander version of itself.

The person who wore the shirt to a gathering of old school friends got laughter before anyone finished reading it. The same shirt in an airport gets a blank look.

Nothing about the shirt changed. Only the number of people in the room who were there the first time.
