Piece 231Craft

Not in a single photo

· 1 min read

In one family in Abha, it is always the same son-in-law who takes the photographs. Every graduation, every engagement, every long lunch on the terrace when the weather turns cool. He arranges people, tells the children to stop moving, and catches the moment the grandmother finally laughs.

Look through the albums from the last fifteen years and you will find almost everyone, many times over. You will barely find him. A shoulder at the edge of one frame. His hand, holding a plate of dates, at the edge of another.

Ask the family who made those years memorable and very few would name him. Yet without him there would be no record at all, only stories that drift a little further from the truth each time they are told.

Every group has someone in this position. The person who writes up what was agreed so that it actually happens. The one who books the hall, chases the caterer, and checks that the older relatives have a lift home. The colleague whose job is to make other people's work visible, and who therefore spends their days out of view.

We tend to judge contribution by who appears in the picture, because the picture is what survives. But the picture always has an author, and the author is standing on the other side of it.

This is not an argument for feeling sorry for him. He likes the job. He is good at it, and people would notice quickly if he stopped.

It is simply worth knowing that the person missing from every photograph is often the reason there are any photographs at all.
