Piece 527Craft

Once you see it

· 1 min read

A woman in Kuwait City sells plain white mugs online. They are well made and nobody much notices them. Then a buyer leaves a comment: seen from the side, the handle looks exactly like an ear, as if the mug is listening.

It does. It always did. Nobody had said so.

From that day, every photograph of the mug looks like a small white head tilted to one side. She cannot unsee it, and neither can anyone who reads the comment. She renames it the listening mug. People start buying it for friends who never stop talking, for friends who are good at listening, for a grandmother who pretends not to hear. The object has not changed at all. What changed is that it now carries a picture people remember.

That is what a hook does. It is a likeness or a phrase that, once noticed, attaches itself to the thing for good. Before it, a product is just a shape. After it, the shape is a story, and the story travels without her.

I think most products, ideas and small shops do not need more features. They need the one observation that makes them impossible to forget, and someone patient enough to go looking for it.
