One less person at the desk

· 1 min read

A car garage in Doha opened with a simple idea. You would be told the truth about your car.

In the early years that was the whole business. A technician walked you to the vehicle and showed you the worn part. Someone called the same afternoon with a price. The man at the front desk remembered your name and what you drove. People recommended it the way they would recommend a good doctor, and it grew into several branches.

Then the growth itself became the point.

Why keep someone at the front desk when a screen can take bookings? Why walk each customer to the car when a photograph can be sent? Why call back the same day when tomorrow will do? Why pay experienced technicians when younger ones cost less and can be replaced when they leave? Each change saved a little money, and each one, taken alone, seemed reasonable. The figures improved for a while.

It is like pulling blocks from the bottom of a stacked tower. The first few come out cleanly, and the structure still stands, so the next one seems safe too. What is being removed is the very thing that held it up: the attention, the trust, the people who knew what they were doing.

Customers notice slowly, then all at once. The wait gets longer, the explanation gets thinner, the bill arrives without a conversation. Eventually someone opens a small garage nearby with a technician who walks you to the car and shows you the worn part.

That newcomer is not doing anything clever. He is simply doing what the big garage used to do, before it decided the care was a cost.
