One pot on the stairs

· 1 min read

On a side street in Alexandria, the change started with a single clay pot of basil on a stairwell landing.

Nobody announced it. A woman on the second floor put it there, watered it, and moved it aside when the cleaner needed to pass. For a while it looked a little silly, one plant in a dusty stairwell, doing nothing much for anyone.

Then a neighbour added a second pot. Someone replaced the bulb that had been dead for a year, because the landing now looked like a place worth lighting. A boy started carrying the watering can up on Fridays. By spring there was a bench by the entrance that nobody remembers buying.

We tend to wait for better to come from above. A new rule, a new budget, an announcement with a ribbon. Sometimes it does. Far more often, the things that improve a street, a habit or a market grow from a handful of people who decide to do something small and then keep doing it.

The early part is unglamorous. The first pot does less than a proper garden would. The first attempt at almost anything new works worse than the old way, which is exactly why most people stop there.

What changes the street is not the first pot. It is the second, added by someone who felt invited by the first, and the woman who keeps watering long after anyone notices.

Better begins small enough to start today, leaves room for someone else to join, and then stays.
