Market

Only the colour was translated

· 1 min read

The region changed one word. Black became White, years ago, because Friday is the blessed day of the week here and black was the wrong colour to hang on it. A marketplace made the call, everyone followed, and it cost nothing.

Then everything else came in through the same door, untouched.

The midnight start, borrowed from a country where the sale is the morning after a Thursday dinner nobody here eats. The countdown clock, ticking towards a single day, in a region that has been discounting since the eleventh. The doorbuster, one item at a price that loses money, for the first hundred people through a door that here is a phone screen. The shopper in the creative, alone, awake at dawn, elbows out, winning a television.

And the tone. Hurry. Last chance. Do not miss out. The whole imported register is one person against a clock.

Now look at who is buying this Friday in Jeddah or Cairo. Friday is the family day in most of the region, and a weekend day in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. The person holding the card is rarely buying for themselves. They are buying for a household, with the household in the room, after a lunch that runs long, and the decision has four opinions in it and none of them is in a hurry.

A day designed around a lone bargain hunter at midnight has landed in a market where the buyer is a family in the afternoon. The clock is counting down to the wrong hour, for the wrong number of people.

Localisation changed the word that cost nothing to change. The mechanics that cost something, the hour, the clock, the person in the ad, the pace of the copy, were left exactly as they arrived, and every year they run again, in white, for a shopper who does not live here.
