Open the door

· 1 min read

A woman in Ajman builds children's bunk beds to order, and her posts try to say everything.

Every wood, every finish, the mattress sizes, the safety rails, the assembly process, the delivery window, a paragraph about how she started. It is all true and all useful. It is also a wall. The person scrolling past has nothing left to ask, so she asks nothing, and keeps scrolling.

I understand the urge. Saying everything feels safe. It answers the objection before it arrives, it relieves the small anxiety of being misunderstood, and it lets the seller feel the matter is settled. Case made, door closed.

But almost nobody buys a bed for their children from a single post. They buy after a conversation: a photo of the room, a question about the low ceiling, a worry about the younger one climbing in the night. The post was never meant to be the sale. It was meant to be the first knock.

The best reply a message can hope for is a question back. What would work in a room this small? Do you come to Sharjah? Can the ladder go on the other side? Each of those is a door opening, and each one tells the seller more than any paragraph could have.

So the job is not to explain yourself completely. It is to say enough that the right person leans in, and to leave room for them to speak.

Communication is not a thing you deliver once. It is a thing two people keep doing.
