Painted shoes and no reply
A young man in Doha paints trainers by hand. Each pair takes him most of a week. He films the process, posts it, and waits.
Nobody says anything.
Humming in the car, nobody expects an audience. It would be strange to get one. But the moment something goes out where anyone at all could see it, silence starts to feel like an answer. Hours of careful work, and the screen shows nothing coming back.
Once is fine. Week after week, it wears a person down.
That is when the bad ideas arrive. Paint something louder and simpler that might travel. Copy whatever got attention last month. Offer a discount, chase a trend, post six times a day. Or the worst one: decide that nobody wants it and stop.
The better path is slower. Each pair he paints and shows is not a single throw that missed. It is part of a pile of work that keeps growing, and a pile of work, made with a consistent eye, is what people eventually find and trust. One post rarely changes anything. Forty of them, all clearly from the same hand, start to.
What speeds it up is not volume. It is thinking hard about who the shoes are for. The football fan who wants his club's colours, the bride who wants something for the evening, the father who wants matching pairs with his son. Showing them what they are looking for, in the places they already look, instead of hoping they will work out what he is doing on their own.
The silence is not a verdict. It is what the start sounds like, before the right people know you are there.
