Pick one way to start
A makeup artist starting out in Dubai has a strange first season. The handful of people who book her in those early months decide, without meaning to, how much of the next few years goes.
A few early brides bring a few early photographs. The photographs make the next bride more willing to book. A guest at one wedding asks for her number. Someone with a following shares her work. A good start is not only a good start; it drags more advantages along behind it. A quiet start does the opposite, and the quiet feeds on itself.
This is unfair, and it often rewards luck rather than talent. It is also how a lot of markets sort people. Accepting that leaves her with two honest choices.
The first is to treat the debut as the whole game. Hold back until the portfolio, the kit, the prices and the first few people who might spread the word are all ready. Start later, and smaller, if that is what it takes to start strong.
The second is to decide the debut does not count. Expect the first seasons to be thin and plan to survive them. Keep enough money and patience to practise on every face she can, answer every message, earn each client one at a time, and be judged in her third year rather than her third month.
Either can work. What does not work is the mix.
The artist who rushes out to catch the moment, then tries to grind patiently through the silence that follows, has spent the polish the first plan needed and the stamina the second plan needed. That is where people run out of both, and soon after, of the will to carry on.
Pick one road, and let the other one go.
