Reaching people is the first mile

· 1 min read

A young designer in Kuwait City spent most of a year on her online shop before it opened. The lamps are lovely. The photographs are properly lit, the checkout works first time, and the packaging has survived being dropped down a flight of stairs.

She describes what is left as the final step. Now people just need to find it.

That small word "just" carries a great deal. It treats everything she has made as the hard part and everything still to come as a finishing touch, as though the shop were a road already laid and only the short stretch to the customer's door remained.

It is the other way round. Until one person who might want one of those lamps knows they exist, nothing she has built is connected to anything. The careful photographs have no viewer. The tested packaging has nowhere to go. Reaching people is not where the road ends. It is where the road begins.

Seeing it that way changes the order of the work. It means finding the first fifty people who care about handmade light before taking the hundredth product photograph. It means asking where those people already gather, what they already read, whose taste they already trust, and shaping the shop around the answer.

There are plenty of good shops across the region sitting finished and unvisited, their owners waiting for the easy bit at the end.

The connection was never the easy bit at the end. It is the first mile, and every other mile depends on it.
