Read it before you live it

· 1 min read

A woman in Al Khobar has made silver jewellery at the weekends for three years, and she is thinking about leaving her job to do it full time.

Everyone she asks says the same thing. Nobody can teach you this. You have to do it and find out.

They are partly right. Nobody can hand her the feeling of a slow month, or the first customer who sends something back, or the morning she realises she misses having colleagues. Those arrive only by living them.

But the reverse is also true, and it gets said less often. Some things she will not see clearly until someone else has written them down. A good book by people who made the same move lets her walk through the first year before she has spent anything on it. She can meet the slow month on the page and decide, calmly, what she would do. She can notice which parts frighten her and which do not, while the choice is still hers to change.

A book does not replace the road. It shows its shape, the turns and the steep parts, so that the real walk is less of a shock.

It does one more thing, and it may matter most. It gives her words. When her father asks why on earth she would leave a good job, she has a way to explain what she is doing and what she expects, in sentences she did not have to invent alone. And when she asks a friend to help, there is something they can both point to.

Some lessons have to be lived. Others are better read first, so that the living makes sense.
