Piece 328Market

Ready before anyone asks

· 1 min read

A woman in Dammam sells printed tote bags from a small online shop, and every few weeks a holiday or a payday weekend arrives that the whole market seems to rush towards.

Most sellers around her hear about these moments the way everybody does, a few days out, when the banners start appearing. Then the scramble begins. Photographs taken on the kitchen table at midnight. Descriptions written in a hurry. A discount picked because a neighbour picked one.

She does something duller. On quiet weeks, when nothing is happening, she photographs next month's designs, writes their descriptions, and leaves them unpublished, finished and sitting there. A folder of work that nobody has asked for yet.

When the busy weekend is announced, she is not starting. She is pressing a button. Her evenings that week go on answering customers and packing orders properly, which is the part that brings people back.

From outside it looks like luck. It is timing, done early.

The real gain is not even the busy weekend. It is what the folder does to the rest of her month. With the next thing already sitting there, she can give her attention to the thing after it: a new design, a better supplier, an idea she would otherwise never reach.

Plenty of people hold off until something tells them to start. The announcement, the invitation, the moment that makes it official. Those moments do arrive. They just arrive for everyone at once, and too late to build anything in.

The sellers who seem ready for every moment simply stopped waiting to be told.
