Piece 457Craft

Safe before interesting

· 1 min read

A small online shop in Riyadh sells a countertop cooker that uses hot air instead of oil. The product page is full of excitement. A new technology. A different way to cook. Seven programmes, a touch screen, a colour nobody else stocks.

The people who buy in the first month love all of that. They are the ones who always try the new thing first, and part of the pleasure is that it might not work. Novelty is the reason they came.

Most people are not like that. For most people, new means risk. A machine they have never used, from a shop they have never heard of, paid for before they have seen it. Every exciting detail on the page adds one more thing that could go wrong.

So the shop sells to the eager few, then stalls, and the temptation is to make the page more exciting still. Another feature. A bolder video. Something newer.

That is the wrong lever. The hesitant majority is not waiting to be dazzled. It is waiting to feel safe. Paying when the box arrives. A phone number that a real person answers. A clear way to send it back. A neighbour or a cousin who has one and still uses it. A page that says what it does in plain words and shows it in an ordinary kitchen.

None of that is interesting. All of it lowers the risk of saying yes, and lowering the risk is what most people need before they act.

The few will come for the thrill. The many come only when it feels safe.
