Smart is the word for the hidden part

· 1 min read

A woman stops at a second-hand book stall in Al Karama and asks for a novel she half remembers. She cannot recall the title, only that the cover was blue and that her mother read it one long summer in Alexandria.

The man who runs the stall thinks for a moment, reaches into a pile near the back and hands her the right book. Then, without being asked, he hands her a second one she has never heard of and tells her she will like it more.

She does.

We have a word for what happened there. We say he is smart. It is a generous word, and also a lazy one. What we mean is that he made a jump we could not follow. Somewhere in his head, years of readers and covers and conversations met half a sentence from a stranger, and out came an answer that skipped every step we would have needed. We did not see the steps, so we gave the whole thing one name.

That is most of what smart means in daily life. Not a score, not a degree. A leap whose working is hidden from us, which we decide to trust because it lands.

The odd part is that the phone in her bag now does this too, all day long. It shows her a dress she never searched for, a song she did not know she wanted, a recipe for what happens to be in her fridge. Nobody told it those things. It joined scraps together the way the man at the stall did, and on most days it is right, and on some days it is badly wrong.

Nobody calls the phone wise. But if we are honest, we understand its leap about as well as we understood his. Smart was always the name for the part we could not see.
