Somebody already forecast this

· 1 min read

A hotel in Jeddah already knows what the last week of this month is worth. It has known for weeks, and the number is published.

Open its booking page and step through the nights one at a time. The rate sits flat, flat, flat, and then on one night it lifts, and on the night after that it lifts again, and by the first days of September it is near what the place charges in a normal week. Do the same with a one-way seat out of a city that Gulf families spend the summer in. Same shape, steeper.

That curve is a demand forecast for your own street. It was built by people with years of booking data, a model, and every reason to be right, because they are pricing against it tonight and carry the cost of being wrong.

The restaurant on the corner has none of that, and finds out the city is back when the city walks in, with a rota built for an empty fortnight and a fridge ordered against last week's covers.

Nobody sells this, which is most of why nobody values it. It is public, free, updated through the day, and reading it costs one afternoon: list the nights, list the rates, mark the night the number turns.

That night is roughly when the rest of it turns too. The bookings, the delivery volume, the queue at eight, the first full Thursday. Not because hotels and restaurants are the same business, but because the same households sit behind both, and one of the two has already been paid to work out when they are coming.

A small operator will never commission research, and on this it does not need to. Somebody with better data than either of us has published the answer, by the night, in riyals.
