Talent buys a ticket

· 1 min read

With football on every café screen this month, a fourteen-year-old in Taif has made up his mind. He is going to keep goal professionally. He trains before school and after it, studies keepers' footwork on his phone, and tells anyone who asks that he is certain.

His certainty is lovely. It also has no effect on the outcome.

Hard work matters enormously, up to a point. It is what carries him from the street to an academy, from the academy to a youth side, and from there into the small group of boys who are genuinely good enough. Without the effort he has no chance at all.

But inside that group, everyone works hard and everyone has talent. What separates the few who make it from the many who do not is a coach's mood on a trial day, an injury at seventeen, which club happens to need a keeper in the year he is ready. That part is not a fair contest. It is a draw.

A great deal of what people chase looks like this. The audition, the scholarship, the small brand hoping the right buyer notices it at the right moment. Effort earns the ticket. It does not choose the number.

I think the sensible path is to train as if everything depends on him, while knowing that it does not. Keep up the schoolwork. Learn something useful alongside the gloves. Have a second road ready.

That is not a lack of belief. A lack of belief would be training less. A second road is simply what clear thinking looks like when the last step comes down to luck.
