The advice that skips the work

· 1 min read

A graphic designer in Suez has decided to go out on her own, and for weeks she has been studying people online who did the same.

Most of what she hears has the same shape. Here is the person who made it, here is the path they took, follow it and it will work for you. The story is always told by the rare one for whom it did. Nobody films the many others, so the advice sounds like a map when it is closer to a lottery ticket with instructions.

The tasks that get the most attention are the comfortable ones. Choosing a name. Designing a logo for herself. Building the page that shows her work. These feel like progress, and they can be finished in a weekend. They are also the part nobody will ever pay for.

What the videos leave out is everything after. Finding the first three people who need what she does and trust her enough to try. Doing a job well enough that one of them tells a friend. Saying no to a bad client so there is room for a better one. Waking on a quiet Tuesday with nobody expecting her anywhere, and starting anyway, because the only manager she has now is herself, and she has never had to manage this person before.

None of that makes a good video. It is slow, it repeats, and it does not end.

The difficult part was never a secret. It is the work itself, done again tomorrow.
