The adviser who only does phones

· 1 min read

Buying a phone in Deira, most people end up asking the man behind the counter which one to get. His advice is free, friendly and fast. It is also, quietly, not for you.

He earns more on some models than others. The case he recommends carries a better margin than the one you need. None of this makes him a villain. It makes him someone whose help is funded by somebody else, so it leans, gently, toward whoever is funding it.

Now picture the other option. A young man who knows phones and only phones. He does not sell them. You pay him a small fee, he asks what you actually do with your phone all day, and he tells you which one, and why, and where to buy it. Then he is finished.

Two things make him better, and neither is that he is cleverer.

The first is that you pay him. The money settles whose side he is on. When the help is free, you are what is being sold. When you pay, you are the one being served.

The second is how little he promises. The shop promises everything: handsets, cases, repairs, a plan, a warranty, a deal. Promising everything makes everything a little worse, and makes the whole shop seem pushy and muddled at the same time. He promises one answer to one question, and because the promise is small, he can keep it every time.

Whether he stays that way is another matter. Plenty of honest advisers start selling cases on the side once they get popular.

For now, he is the one I would ask.
