The afternoon it all moves

· 1 min read

Most working days are a push. You sit down, you start, you drag yourself through the first hour, and eventually something gets made. That is the job. Doing it on the dull days is what turns an amateur into a professional.

But every so often a different kind of day turns up. The sentences arrive faster than you can type them. The layout falls into place. The plan you have been circling for a month suddenly has an obvious shape.

On those days, most people carry on as normal. They keep the routine appointment, answer each message as it lands, pop out for the groceries, sit through the call that could have waited. The flow is treated as a pleasant surprise instead of something to protect.

It is worth protecting, because it is scarce. Nobody can summon it, and it does not keep until tomorrow.

So when it shows up, clear the ground around it. Move whatever can be moved. Hand off whatever someone else can do. Let the inbox sit until the evening, or the next morning. Nothing in it will spoil.

The ordinary work will still be there when the day ends. It always is.

The afternoon when everything moves will not wait for you to finish your errands.
