The auction you cannot win

· 1 min read

The arithmetic always looks wonderful at the start.

A new customer is worth a certain amount to you over a year. Someone will sell you a visitor for a bit less than that. So you buy as many visitors as you can afford, and the gap is your growth.

The problem is that every competitor has done the same sum. Each of them sees the same gap, and each of them bids for the same visitor. The price climbs until the gap closes, and then it keeps climbing, because someone is always willing to lose a little more money than you for a little longer. It is an auction, and auctions are won by the person who cares least about the price.

What follows is familiar. The business pours more into buying attention. It listens to anyone who claims to know the secret: post at this hour, use this kind of photo, never raise the spend too fast. Much of it is guessing dressed as expertise. The seller, under pressure, tries all of it.

A few win. Most quietly run out of money while looking busy.

The way out is slower and less exciting. Make something your current customers want to tell people about, and make it easy for them to do so. Not because you asked, and not because of a discount code, but because recommending you makes them look good, helps a friend, or says something about who they are.

There is no formula for that. Which is exactly why it is the only version of growth that nobody can simply outbid.
