The better choice that stays small

· 1 min read

A family in Cairo carries a heavy pack of small plastic water bottles up four flights of stairs every few days.

Nobody in the flat loves this. The empties fill a bin each week. The pack is awkward on the stairs. But it is sold on every corner, it costs little, and it is what they have always bought. Habit has the great advantage of requiring no decision.

There is a better option. A large refillable jug on a dispenser, delivered and swapped at the door, is less work, close in cost, and leaves a fraction of the waste. The people who use it rarely go back. Still, most flats on the street have not changed.

This is the difficulty with any shift that depends on what people choose to buy. Nobody is forced. Each household weighs its own week, and the old way wins on familiarity. Some changes only happen because they are made compulsory. What is merely better, and merely available, tends to wait. What we already have keeps winning simply because it is already there.

So the large problems will not be solved by a shopping list. They need rules, investment and systems rethought, and nobody should pretend that a different purchase replaces any of that.

But now and then the better choice is already sitting on the shelf, priced fairly and easy to use, only waiting to be noticed. In those cases the change is small and entirely ours. Switch, and when it works, mention it to the neighbour on the landing. That is how a better thing stops being small.
