The bill always finds its way back
A man lets a holiday flat in the hills near Abha. The photographs are lovely: the view at dusk, the clean white bedding, the balcony in soft light.
What the photographs leave out is the generator next door that runs all night, and the water heater that gives about four minutes of warmth. Fixing either would take money and a few weekends of effort. Taking better pictures took one afternoon.
So the bookings come in, and for a while it looks like the clever choice. Income without the work behind it.
But the work did not vanish. It was moved somewhere else. It went into the family who arrive tired after a long drive and lie awake listening to the engine. Into the review they write on the second morning. Into the cousin they warn, and the cousin's friends. Into a calendar that fills more slowly every season, for reasons he cannot quite name.
Most shortcuts in trade have this shape. One thing is taken without the thing that was supposed to travel with it: the sale without the substance, the attention without anything worth paying attention to. Each looks like a gain on the day it happens, because the missing half has not been noticed yet.
Money and effort belong together. So do selling and caring what happens after the sale. Pull them apart and the account does not close. It stays open, quietly, gathering weight.
I do not think most people who cut the corner believe they are getting away with anything. They believe the cost will be small, or late, or sent to somebody else.
It is rarely small. It is often late. And it almost always comes home to whoever made the choice.
