The boxing club that was never for everyone

· 1 min read

A former fighter runs a boxing club in a warehouse on the edge of Abu Dhabi. The sessions are loud, brutal and a little theatrical. He shouts, the music is too much, and nobody leaves without being sick at least once in their first month. A few hundred members would not train anywhere else. They bring friends to watch, the way people bring friends to a show.

It does not need to please everyone, and it works because it does not try.

Then a company that runs gyms in malls offers him his name on ten branches.

This is where the thing that built him becomes the thing in his way. The people who join a gym in a mall are not looking for a show. They want a class that starts on time, an instructor who is kind about their knees, the same hour every week. The shouting that his members love reads to them as a reason to cancel. To win them he would need something steady and a little dull, delivered the same way in every branch.

There are two honest answers. He can take the deal and become a different kind of business, reliable and broad, and accept that his few hundred will drift away. Or he can decline politely, keep the warehouse, and serve the people already waiting by the door. Both can work, and the second takes more nerve than it looks.

The answer that rarely works is the one most people pick: going broad while trying to keep a little of the theatre. The classes end up too harsh for the mall and too tame for the warehouse, and he loses the crowd he had without winning the one he wanted.
